A humanoid robot developed by Chinese smartphone maker Honor has made headlines after completing a 100-meter race in just 9.32 seconds. The performance was reported by China’s state broadcaster and is being viewed as another major step in the country’s rapidly growing humanoid robotics industry.
The robot, named Lightning, achieved a top speed of around 14.5 meters per second during a preparatory test event for the second World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing. Its 9.32-second run was faster than the 9.58-second human world record set by Jamaican sprinting legend Usain Bolt in 2009.
Bolt’s record has remained one of the most famous achievements in athletics for more than a decade. He set the mark during the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin, producing a performance that became a benchmark for human speed. Lightning’s result has now attracted attention because it shows how quickly robotic technology is developing.
However, the comparison between the robot and Bolt should be understood carefully. A humanoid robot and a human athlete have very different physical designs, energy systems and running mechanics. The achievement is therefore less about replacing human athletes and more about demonstrating the progress being made in robotics, artificial intelligence and mechanical engineering.
Lightning has already shown impressive endurance as well as speed. In April, the robot reportedly won the Beijing half marathon, completing the 21-kilometer distance in 50 minutes and 26 seconds. That time was faster than the pace associated with the elite men’s human world record over the same distance.
The robot’s physical design has also been modified since its earlier races. During the half marathon, Lightning stood about 169 centimeters tall and had legs measuring around 95 centimeters. Researchers later increased its leg length by 10 centimeters, bringing them to approximately 1.05 meters ahead of the humanoid robot games.
China has been investing heavily in humanoid robots as part of its broader strategy to develop advanced technology industries. Government policymakers and technology companies are looking at ways robots can eventually be used in factories, warehouses, logistics operations and even consumer applications.
The growing focus on humanoid machines is being supported by advances in artificial intelligence, sensors, batteries, motors and robotics software. Developers are working to create machines that can move more naturally, understand their surroundings and perform tasks that traditionally require human workers.
Lightning’s latest performance highlights how quickly these technologies are improving. While a robot breaking a human sprint record may sound surprising, the bigger story is the rapid development of machines capable of running, balancing and operating at high speeds.
The second World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing provide an important platform for companies and researchers to demonstrate these advances. As competition in robotics grows, future machines could become faster, more efficient and capable of handling increasingly complex tasks.
For now, Lightning’s 9.32-second run has created a remarkable technology headline. It does not replace Usain Bolt’s historic human record, but it does demonstrate how far humanoid robotics has progressed—and how quickly the next generation of intelligent machines may be evolving.
