False images showing damaged infrastructure, troop movements, floods, or wildfires could spread rapidly before experts have time to verify their authenticity. As these AI-generated visuals become more sophisticated, distinguishing genuine satellite imagery from fabricated content may become increasingly difficult for both professionals and the general public.
Experts also believe the growing presence of AI-generated satellite imagery could gradually weaken public confidence in authentic geospatial evidence. However, some researchers argue that technical protections alone may not be enough if manipulated images are widely shared on platforms that do not verify their source.
