As children spend more time learning, communicating and exploring the internet, keeping them safe online has become an increasingly important challenge. In a significant step toward creating a safer digital environment, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and Google have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen online safety for children across Pakistan.
The agreement focuses on improving digital awareness, promoting responsible internet use and providing parents, teachers and caregivers with the knowledge and tools needed to protect children in the digital world. The partnership aims to help families better understand online risks while encouraging children to use digital platforms safely and responsibly.
Under the collaboration, PTA and Google will work on a dedicated child safety programme built around awareness, education and capacity-building. The programme will provide practical resources to parents and teachers so they can guide children as they use smartphones, social media, websites and other online services.
One of the key parts of the initiative will be the development of online safety content in English as well as local languages. Providing information in familiar languages could make it easier for parents and educators across the country to understand important safety practices and discuss online risks with children.
The two organisations also plan to conduct training programmes in educational institutions. These activities are expected to improve digital literacy among students, teachers and families while highlighting responsible online behaviour. A nationwide awareness campaign will further help reach millions of families with localised online safety resources, tutorials and guidance.
PTA Chairman (retd) Maj Gen Hafeezur Rehman stressed the importance of cooperation between different stakeholders in protecting children as digital technology becomes a larger part of everyday life. He highlighted the need for collective efforts to ensure that young internet users can benefit from technology while remaining protected from potential online threats.
Dr Khawar Siddique, a member of PTA’s compliance and enforcement team, also emphasised the importance of digital literacy and responsible use of online platforms. According to the authority, educating families and children can play an important role in building a safer and more secure digital environment.
The partnership comes at an important time for Google’s growing presence in Pakistan. The technology company recently inaugurated its local office in the country, nearly four years after registering its operations in Pakistan. Google described the development as an important milestone in its engagement with the Pakistani market.
The latest agreement also follows a meeting between Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhry and a Google delegation. During the meeting, the minister called for stronger cooperation to promote a safe and peaceful digital environment in Pakistan. He also highlighted the importance of proactive monitoring of social media amid the country’s security concerns.
The PTA-Google partnership represents a broader effort to make digital spaces safer for young users. As internet access continues to expand, awareness and education will be essential. By giving parents and teachers better resources and helping children understand responsible digital behaviour, the initiative could contribute to a safer online future for families across Pakistan.
