China is becoming an unexpected destination for a new kind of traveler: technology executives, investors, entrepreneurs and engineers eager to see the country’s innovation machine up close.

From humanoid robots moving across factory floors to electric vehicles rolling off production lines at remarkable speed, China is offering foreign visitors a glimpse of how quickly advanced technology can move from an idea to a mass-market product.


For many visitors, this is more than a business trip. It is an attempt to understand whether China is entering a new era of technological leadership — and whether companies elsewhere are at risk of falling behind.


Robert Wu, CEO of Shanghai-based research firm Baiguan, says interest in China has changed dramatically. Visitors who once viewed the country mainly as a manufacturing center are increasingly coming to study its technology ecosystem.


Wu has already organized tours for investors, entrepreneurs and business executives, with some five-day programs costing as much as $15,000. A significant portion of participants have come from Southeast Asia, showing that curiosity about Chinese technology extends well beyond Western markets.


A growing number of specialist agencies are now building businesses around this demand. Shanghai-based GloPen, for example, says inquiries from international clients increased sharply in 2026 and that it now arranges more than 100 company visits each month.


The appeal is easy to understand. China has built enormous industrial ecosystems around electric vehicles, batteries, artificial intelligence, robotics and consumer electronics. Cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hangzhou and Hefei have become important stops for visitors trying to understand this transformation.


Bertrand Chen, CEO of the Global Shipping Business Network, described the experience as something that cannot be fully understood through reports or presentations. Seeing the technology operating inside a real factory, he argues, provides a different perspective on China's industrial capabilities.


Fear of Falling Behind


Behind the growing interest is also a sense of anxiety.


European and American companies are facing pressure to improve productivity while competing in areas such as AI, automation and advanced manufacturing. Some executives are therefore traveling to China not simply to admire its technology, but to discover what lessons can be applied to their own businesses.


AI consultant Alex Shengyun Lu says many European executives arrive with two central questions: what can they learn from Chinese companies, and how does China's state-supported approach help technologies move from development to large-scale deployment?


That curiosity does not necessarily mean visitors believe China has surpassed the rest of the world in every field. Technology Buzz founder Rui Ma has cautioned that non-Chinese companies still hold significant global market share, valuable intellectual property and major profits.


But China’s ability to manufacture at scale is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.


Shenzhen at the Center


Perhaps nowhere is this transformation more visible than Shenzhen.


Once known primarily as a manufacturing powerhouse, the southern Chinese city has developed into a major technology center where hardware startups, electronics suppliers, robotics companies and entrepreneurs operate within a remarkably dense ecosystem.


Foreign founders are increasingly visiting the city to identify suppliers, develop prototypes and explore potential partnerships. Local networks connect entrepreneurs with factories capable of producing components ranging from batteries and displays to robotics hardware.


For American manufacturing consultant Joshua Woodard, the reality on the factory floor often matters more than geopolitical tensions. Many international companies still depend on Chinese suppliers, making complete separation from China's manufacturing ecosystem extremely difficult.


The growing number of foreign technology visitors reflects a broader shift in how China is viewed. It is no longer simply a place where products are manufactured cheaply. Increasingly, it is being studied as a laboratory for scaling technology quickly.


For the global technology industry, the message is clear: understanding China's innovation engine may no longer be optional. As the race for AI, robotics, electric vehicles and advanced manufacturing intensifies, more business leaders are choosing to see the competition for themselves.
